I am a doctor and a surgeon specialised in ophthalmology. I studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pavia, region of Lombardy, Italy, one the of the oldest universities in the world. Like the UK’s Oxford and Cambridge, the University of Pavia is structured using a college system, dating back to the 16th century, with a striking historic campus. I am a former student of the The Almo Collegio Borromeo a private university hall of residence classified as a "highly qualified Cultural Institute" by the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research and is the oldest such institution remaining in operation in Italy.
I underwent formal training in Ophthalmology at the University of Pavia. During my core training, I developed a keen interest in clinical research, which brought me to undertake a research fellowship at the Manchester Vision Regeneration Lab, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. My research activity was focused on retinal imaging techniques, vision regeneration and retinal prosthesis implants (Argus retinal prosthesis)
Alongside my interest in research, my passion for eye surgery and clinical ophthalmology in the field of glaucoma brought me to undergoing two post-CCT Glaucoma Fellowships in major UK's Teaching Centres. First at the Queen Medical Centre at Nottingham University Hospital, followed by St Thomas' Hospital, London.
Currently, my NHS practice is based at the University Hospital of Southampton where I work as a substantive consultant ophthalmologist and provide high standard care in cataract and glaucoma. I also lead quality improvement projects within the Eye Department as Clinical Lead for the dedicated Eye Theatres. Additionally, I am a GMC recognised Clinical and Educational Supervisor for doctors and trainees within the NHS England South East.
My private practice is based at the Spire Southampton Hospital where I provide high quality and comprehensive care in ophthalmology, focused on cataract surgery and glaucoma care. I have performed over 6.000 procedures including cataract and glaucoma surgeries and laser treatments with a very high safety profile and success rate. My motto is "patients as fulcrum of care"; I pride myself with a high quality of care based on "listening first" - I spend time listening about the patients' needs, preferences and expectations, based on which, I tailor an accurate treatment plan. I keep myself always up to date with the latest knowledge, technologies and devices by attending national and international conferences.
Although the scope of my work is mainly clinical and surgical, I am active in research and I regularly lead research projects presented at international conferences. As member and Next Generation Partner of the European Glaucoma Society, I am actively involved in developing guidelines in glaucoma surgery and provide support in improving the care in glaucoma.
